Haiti’s Versailles, Sans-Souci Palace, at the foot of the great citadel

Built to be the Versailles of Haiti by slave rebellion leader Henri Christophe, Sans-Souci Palace sits below UNESCO-listed La Citadelle la Ferrière. It is the customary departure point for the 7-km horse trek up the mountain. Presaging modern disaster, the palace was torn asunder by an earthquake in 1842.
