Hopping around the Pacific I have been sampling airline entertainment apps.
Some airlines, including Virgin Australia and Aircalin, do not have airline apps in terms of travel functionality, however they do have entertainment apps. Some other world airlines maintain separate travel and entertainment apps.
Once you are on the flight, unless the flight has wifi which you may need to pay, it is too late to download the app.
I have found performance good, with smooth playback. Battery consumption is understandably high. Like built-in entertainment, PA announcements pause the app and can be at deafening levels.
