The road northeast from Encarnación to Brazil is ‘misiones’ country and indeed one of the best ways to sample Paraguay is to cross from Argentina’s Misiones region to Encarnación and spend a day at the UNESCO-listed Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue, Trinidad and Jesús for short.
Transiting from Argentina, which boasts its own missions, avoids the Paraguayan cities of Asunciónand Cuidad del Este, and the 5+ hour drives down from each. The only domestic flights in Paraguay are between Asunción and Ciudad del Este.
The missions date to the 17th and 18th centuries, are situated in pleasant towns off the main road, and are devoid of tourists. A delight.
One ticket includes both, plus San Cosme y Damián on the other side of Encarnación.
The region boasts loads more churches and missions, the ‘yerbe mate capital’ Bella Vista and for those wanting to go way off track, Caaguazú National Park.
