We hear about stores that are deciding to not open on Thanksgiving day, and we think how generous and kind those store managers are. However, there is an alternative point of view: This morning (Thanksgiving) I visited my local Whole Foods and heard some employees happy discussion of the fact that they were getting paid 2x normal. They wanted the money more than the day off.

Stores that decide to close on Thanksgiving day do lose out on sales, but they also reduce labor costs considerably. Whether it’s a net gain or loss would vary with each store.
