I received an email from Air Canada’s Aeroplan about their TD Aeroplan Visa Signature Card. At first I thought it was for Canadian residents, though clicked through and it is for US residents.
The offer is for 25,000 miles for $1,000 spends in the first three billing cycles. Annual fee of $95 is waived in the first year.
Earning is 2x on Air Canada, 1x everywhere else. No annual large spend bonuses. No elite qualifying miles.
Benefits are paltry. The only Air Canada-specific benefit is a waiver on mileage expiration as long as the account is open. Nothing like free checked bag.
It’s hard to make a case for getting this card.
If you want a big sign-up bonus, this isn’t it. Will they eventually increase the offer? I don’t have high expectations. TD Bank is not a big rewards card player. Canadian banks are conservative and used to offering weak bonuses to their domestic customers. This card seems closer to some of the foreign airlines cards in the Barclaycard crap card graveyard, targeted to their most blindly loyal customers.
If you want to earn Aeroplan miles, Amex Membership Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest transfer to Aeroplan.
If you want to earn 2x on Air Canada purchases, there are plenty of credit cards that earn 2x or more on air. My current favorite is the Citi Prestige 3x.
If you want a card from a bank that you have not tapped out for card approvals, this might be worth a credit inquiry to some at the margins.
Disclaimer: I have no financial relationship with TD Bank other than a checking account I maintain because I like that their branches are open 7 days/week. The above offer does not compensate me.

I also received the same email and looked over it. I have an Aeroplan account, only to search for flights with no miles or activity. Still too many other better offers out there.
A US-based credit card that a bank is willing to use Canadian credit history – that’s very rare. The Cross-border application is similar to Amex’s Global Transfer option where Canadian residents without US credit history can get a US card without needing a secured card.
I got this same email but did not realize it was for US residents. I agree – not a great card but if you already have “most” of the cards, this is one that is from a bank you probably don’t have a ton of cards from!
Canadian cards (TD BANK = Toronto Dominion) don’t come with the sky high welcome bonus points found with American cards (YES we are jealous!)
@iv – at a street fair in Toronto last summer I saw about the lowest bonus that could be offered above zero, reminds me to post on it.
I misread this and thought they were giving 25K/$1000 spend in EACH of the first 3 cycles, not 25K for 1K spend within the first 3 cycles. Oops. Well now I have a fancy USA TD Aeroplan card!
@Michael – that oddly worded teaser did get me at first as well.
