April 12 marks the anniversary of the start of the American Civil War, a conflict of issues unresolved this 159 years later.
Every year on this day since the 150th anniversary in 2011, I’ve watched this gallery of images of the war compiled by The Economist, accompanied by Tom Glazer’s A Treasury of Civil War Songs (21 songs stream free with Amazon Prime; also check your public library streaming options).

There are many resources for the traveler keen to explore America and the history of the period. Earlier this year I visited Antietam and re-visited Gettysburg. Due to COVID-19, please only visit them virtually for the time being.

Glad to know you are still alive. What are you so busy with? It almost felt like you doesn’t care for this blog anymore..
@Shannon – back a little bit. Been busy with a startup venture. Had to prioritize that which pays and that which is fun. One of the best parts of back to blogging a bit is to receive your comment.
You’re alive! You’re alive! So happy to know this! I would love to read a post about how you have survived the last month and a half without travel. (I am assuming your trip to DC was your last) and how your family in Shanghai are doing. Have you had to cancel any trips? And how was that trip to Antartica? How did it feel to finally have visited that last continent? Did you feel a little depressed afterwards (like brides do after the wedding)?
@Pauline – back a little bit! We had to cancel my wife’s birthday trip to Australia in June. Last continent didn’t mean as much to me as all the countries so I had a fun time.
