Is It Bad News When Your Domestic Route Goes Lie-Flat?

Check out our Top Rewards Cards to boost your points earning and travel more!

United’s Boston-San Francisco route will go premium on July 1, 2017.

United Boston-San Francisco

Business class will have:

  • Lie-flat seats
  • Saks Fifth Avenue bedding
  • Hot towel service – twice
  • Hot meal
  • Pre-arrival snack basket

Economy Plus will get:

  • A hot meal

Economy will get:

  • N/A

Who Wins?

  1. People who can afford to pay for business class (or have someone pay for them).
  2. People redeeming for business class awards, if you can find ’em, since United does not add a premium to these flights over regular domestic (early results are not encouraging).

United San Francisco-Boston Award Availability

Who Loses:

  1. Elites in economy – gone are the complimentary upgrades, it didn’t take but a moment for United to exclude this route.
  2. Probably people trying to redeem for awards and not finding saver space.

I would not like to see my preferred route go ‘premium’!

Is the above with or without the expanded availability as an elite or from having a credit card?

I am UA Gold and a MP Explorer card holder. SFO-BOS I did not find a single saver business award for the whole schedule. I did not go through BOS-SFO.
