Knox’s Dam Bed and Breakfast is run by Richard and Janet Knox, situated outside the village of Montague in the eastern part of Prince Edward Island. EasTech Cardigan – Island Narratives has a profile of Richard.
The house is delightful, the three rooms are well appointed (all with ensuite bathroom) and the breakfasts exquisite. Janet has a master touch at presentation, from the meals to the bathrooms with locally crafted natural soaps.
The garden is Janet’s, frequented by newlyweds for pictures, the garden is Richard’s. We dared not pluck the flowers but over in the garden Richard pulled crisp string beans for us to eat off the vine, while roast zucchini was served with eggs Benedict.
The backyard opens to a tranquil lake and small dam.
The prices currently range from CAD $85 to $100, extremely competitive with B&Bs in the main city, Charlottetown, which often go for double.
The location is ideal for a restful stay and exploring the sights of the Points East Coastal Drive. That seclusion does mean roughly 30-75 minute drives to Charlottetown and the major tourist attractions of the Central Coastal Drive, though after seeing the often tacky tourist clutter in the main centers of the Central Coast, we were happy to be in the East with its equally scenic landscapes. Nearby is Cardigan Lobster Suppers, a rival to the more famous lobster suppers at New Glasgow and St. Ann. Cardigan makes better use of its waterfront location than New Glasgow, though we did not have time to sample the food.
Knox’s is a frequent stop on bike tours both independent and agency-organized, breaking up the trip from Charlottetown to Souris. One couple we met stayed for two days on a tour run by Macqueen’s, which handles the logistics and luggage transport so bikers can leisurely enjoy their rides.
Best of all is meeting the Knox’s. We felt as family returned from a long parting. They chatted with us, fussed over us, took care of every detail. It was a delight to be their guests.
How do I know Kon’x Dam is the “best” B&B in Prince Edward Island? Objectively, I don’t. I did not visit other B&Bs. Knox’s is best because it was for me the ideal B&B experience. I seldom repeat destinations unless family or friends twist my arm, but I will be back.
