A great summer tradition for my wife and I will be taking a pause. No summer Delta New York JFK – Prince Edward Island, Canada flight. The flights still had not appeared for booking and PEI’s Charlottetown Airport confirmed it. Airplane geek friend theorized Delta’s reduction of regional jets may play a part.
We loved the flight, departing after work on a Friday and arriving back in the morning on Monday we could have a quick getaway without using vacation time. Delta saver award availability was often good.
PEI retains service from Canadian cities on Air Canada, WestJet and SunWing. SunWing is new to me, they run seasonal services to Toronto, Cuba and Dominican Republic. There are no nonstop flights from US cities. The nearest major alternate airport is Halifax, a 3-hour drive. Note the $45.50 roundtrip toll for the Confederation Bridge paid when departing PEI. To eastern PEI there is a ferry from Caribou, Nova Scotia.
See our posts on Prince Edward Island for scenes from the land of Anne and lobster.
We hope to see the Delta flight return in 2016.

I’m headed to Prince Edward Island in a couple of weeks via Air Canada (DTW – YYZ – YOW – YYG), really looking forward to it!
I know what you mean; we traveled to NL last August for 4 days and miraculously got a rental for $132.00 (Using Autoslash). The agent couldn’t believe we found a car for that price.
@Shannon – thanks for noticing, the pros and cons of BoardingArea, they do the tech, but with so many blogs there is a long queue. @Nathan – cars are tight and expensive in summer there (also in Newfoundland) so I recommend getting any reservations you need for your options in now. I tried to go to St John’s last summer last minute and had to cancel because could not find a car at any price. I hope you go up there and have a great trip. The proprietors of my favorite B&B have retired so it just wasn’t meant to… Read more »
I’m planning a visit this year to PEI and I’m having some trouble finding a flight back. I booked PHL to Halifax for 7.5K avios on 7/17 but coming back on on 7/20 is looking harder and harder. I do have a few options (air canada, united, and us airways) and I don’t mind doing a one-way rental to YYG from Halifax and flying back from there or doing the round-trip by car. Luckily everything is refundable so if no award space pops up I’ll cancel my avios flight and the hotel and go somewhere else instead. it’s a shame… Read more »
this is really a bad news as I am planning to visit this year!
