Run through Military Historic Tours and with the joint cooperation of US and Japanese forces, the charter from Guam is open first to veterans and immediate family, and then additional seats are available to interested public. I have been hoping to have a seat since last summer. I received confirmation and am ecstatic!

RTC, thank you so much for this series and the inspiration. I got on the MHT mailing list after reading your blog posts, I am now signed up to visit Iwo Jima in 2019. Will do a self guided visit to Saipan and Tinian on the same trip. Any tips on either of those?
@TCCQuest – my tip to most planning Saipan would be to consider Tinian for a day trip. Since you are visiting both, I recommend the Moon Micronesia or the 2009 or earlier Lonely Planet South Pacific & Micronesia to locate the war sites since there is not much when you get there to direct the way. Driving Tinian’s North Field, puts a sense of scale to the massive war operation at it’s height.

Thanks for the sympathy. I’m sitting on Okinawa where most of the Marines/support staff for the anniversary will be departing from and still have no chance in hell of going. $1500 isn’t bad, I guess I need to get on the list for next year. Unfortunately our direct UA flight to Guam was canc’ed.
When I lived in Guam for many years I was able to go to Iwo Jima 3 times as a volunteer. We worked the entire week the guests were there, with tours in Guam and Saipan, then on to Iwo. It is a very special day on Iwo, although they have cut back on the area that is available to be seen by the guests. I am sure you will really appreciate the whole week. The local Guam vets really roll out the welcome mat with fiestas, softball tournaments, etc. At least they did when I was there 10 years… Read more »

Please do take more pictures! Iwo Jima is not opened to regular travelers whatsoever… it will be a very special trip. But do you have anything interesting to write about Spain? Is M9 a phone to consider about?
I was eligible to go for free as part of the USMC detail all 4 years in the Corps and got fucked out of it every single time. Now as a veteran I have to pay $3,500 and fly to Guam? No fucking thanks. What bullshit!
@Nate – that is incredibly disappointing. Not that it would make a difference in your case, however for others it is worth noting that an Iwo Jima only option is $1,500, which is what I am doing. Award tickets get me to/from Guam.
