Following his star turn in the Million Mile Secrets interview series, Hao Tran has not let fame go to his head, he is still on the road and still not staying in hotels, today surfacing in Oxbridge. I wish I grow up to be like him!

My usual preparedness for traveling did not help for my day trips to Oxford and Cambridge. Having to travel with others and meeting a friend who did not own a UK mobile number made my schedule unpredictable.

There are several travel options from London to the two cities, via bus on Megabus or National Express. I preferred the direct, albeit more expensive, route on the National Rail. My ticket to Oxford after buying one week in advance came out to £12 (~18 USD), but I needed to leave early and was forced to buy a one-way return ticket to London at the station, setting me back another £19. When purchasing my last-minute ticket to Cambridge, I found out that you can purchase a ticket that is valid for up to month for travel at any departure time. The total savings were marginal, but the usefulness is in its flexibility.

If traveling in large groups or families, renting a car is a much more economical and flexible alternative.

While in Oxford, make sure to check out the popular Turf Tavern where Bill Clinton and other dignitaries received “lessons in intoxication” . It is located near the Bridge of Sighs, in an obscure alleyway.

Imbibe like a future president

Cambridge, my favorite of the two, offers unique punting experiences that goes through a river which intersects most of the colleges. Priced from £12-14/pp, it is a bit expensive but a worthwhile experience. Most of the museums are free, but be prepared to pay a nominal fee to tour several of the colleges and churches.
