Just north of downtown Miami amid nondescript blocks of warehouses, the Miami Design District has roared to life, propelled by the annual Art Basel Miami Beach and the efforts of visionary entrepreneurs and artists. The Rapid Traveler visits Miami at least quarterly but was shamefully oblivious to the area until a dear friend took him tonight for dinner and gawking. Dinner was at Michael’s Genuine, a see and be seen restaurants with excellent food.
The district lacks housing except for the relatively close new retail and residential development Midtown Miami, so it clears out at night except for a few hotspots, but during the day it hums. It is not well served by public transportation and the area is spread out over a number of blocks so a car is best.
The exhilarating highlight is the Wynwood Walls, a park of ever- changing graffiti walls, the brainchild of the owner of Joey’s Caffe next door.
The Design District is only about 10 minutes from downtown and 15-20 from Miami Airport, so no excuses, visit!

Next time I have a long layover I plan to skip the Admirals Club and check it out Bambi and “hidden” Miami.
Totally agree with ‘no excuses, visit!’. I visited earlier this month and ate at Michael’s. A different side of Miami I enjoyed thoroughly.
