In March, Iberia launched a worldwide 25% off award sale to celebrate 25 years of Iberia Plus.
The sale was advertised as ending April 11, 2017.
Last night I had occasion to check some US to Madrid award flights on Iberia, those New York, (seasonal) Boston, and Chicago that are Off-Peak 34,000 Avios each way in business class. All coming up as 25,500 (75% of 34,000).
I am finding these across routes Iberia flies and cannot find any other announced promotion.
Update: reader Tony V writes, “New promotion running until Jan 31. Qualifying dates: Feb 1-Mar 23 & Apr 1-May 15. MAD to/from ORD&BOS. Sale details on their Spanish site.”
Except then why am I seeing it on routes such as Shanghai and Tokyo?
Update 2: “Reduced mile req. also for Africa and Asia; Tokyo , Shanghai, Johannesburg, Argiers, and Oran). Same dates as US.”
The Off-Peak and Peak charts for Iberia flights are here, showing the 34,000 this should be (because of fuzzy distance math that keeps Chicago in Band 5 – the opposite of how British Airways/Aer Lingus moved Boston’s airport several miles to increase award prices, with such feats of engineering prowess, they should have been assigned to the Big Dig).
25% off prices Business at the Premium Economy level.
Iberia 2018 Peak Dates are:
- December 15, 2017-January 14, 2018
- March 23-April 1, 2018
- April 27-May 3, 2018
- June 13-17, 2018
- June 22-September 4, 2018
- October 8-11, 2018
- October 26-31, 2018
- November 7-11, 2018
- November 24-26, 2018
- December 5-6, 2018
- December 11-18, 2018
- December 21-24, 2018
- December 29-30, 2018
Iberia Flight Experience:
If you are in the market for low price awards on a solid airline, take a look. I enjoy Iberia business class, having flown it New York JFK-Madrid. Nice cheeses.
I don’t remember if I’ve flown them long-haul economy. Unmemorable economy flights for me mean they were fine. Short-haul they are typical Euro style.
Connecting in Madrid (or Barcelona) is a pleasure except that they keep those airports at sweltering temperatures. Yet the Europeans still have their coats and scarves.
(Update: my transit experiences of those airports has primarly been intra-Europe, I immediatelty heard from several travelers that the transit experience the US at Madrid is extremely slow.)
Madrid to Shanghai is another award sweet spoint, along with the US routes.

I few Iberia MAD-JFK last month (in coach) and it was unbearably hot. It was so uncomfortable that I vowed to never fly them again.
Have you ever experienced this is your travels?
I did, last month. I asked the FA to lower the temp, but nothing happened. I couldn’t get any sleep as result. it was actually surprising that most passengers were sleeping under their blankets. On the flight back though, it was a much better experience.
Wow, finally booked MAD -> ORD after quite an adventure. Was expecting to pay 34k each for business, but was pleasantly surprised by the sale (that’s how I found this post — by Googling whether there was a sale on). That’s where the fun ended. First issue was entering passenger info. In the end, I had to switch to Edge browser from Chrome, enter my wife as a “New Beneficiary”, then select her from my beneficiary list, then add my daughter as a “Companion.” If I did it any other way, all their demographic info would disappear when I moved… Read more »
For several years each time I log in to Iberia it tries to get me to update my address, however I update it there is an error and I have to cancel, only to see it next time. And then there’s the time I tried to call them to book an award on Binter Canaries…
New promotion running until Jan 31. Qualifying dates: Feb 1-Mar 23 & Apr 1-May 15. MAD to/from ORD&BOS. Sale details on their Spanish site.
I am seeing the same on other routes such as Madrid-Shanghai. My connection is really slow to test many of them. Anything further on the Spanish site?
Reduced mile req. also for Africa and Asia; Tokyo , Shanghai, Johannesburg, Argiers, and Oran). Same dates as US.
Thank you!
I’m trying to transfer avios from BA to IB. I have never had miles in my iberia account. If I transfer 1000 points into IB, will I be able to transfer between the two? That is the only requirement I can think of that I have not met. Any help is appreciated!
Need Iberia account open 90 days and some prior activity, you maybe transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Iberia to prime it, if that is an option for you.
They’ve been open for more than that. I took advantage of an Amex transfer bonus this summer, but put them into BA.
If the Iberia account also has had some activity it should be fine. If you have a BA Household account the ‘Combine My Avios’ tool won’t work. In that case, register an account on Avios.com with a UK address (not US) to get full transfer functionality. If you already have an Aer Lingus AerClub account that doubles as Avios.com and that approach may not work.
Called BA, and they said they cannot verify IB account. Maybe the lack of activity is causing them not to be able to verify? Appreciate the help.
Or somewhere account info does not perfectly match, somewhere along the line my Ultimate Rewards link to BA broke and I have given up trying to fix it. If ‘Combine’ and Avios.com aren’t working, then most likely is you need that Iberia activity first.
Thanks for this, but I see the normal prices (no 25% discount).
Iberia routes and dates?
Jep, just tried to book ORD-MAD (and MAD-ORD) on several dates, but on all flights I see 34/K avios (all off peak). Also tried JFK-MAD/MAD-JFK.
Reader Tony V just wrote, “New promotion running until Jan 31. Qualifying dates: Feb 1-Mar 23 &
Apr 1-May 15. MAD to/from ORD&BOS. Sale details on their Spanish
site.” Except I am also seeing this on routes such as MAD-PVG, MAD-NRT.
Looks like it’s a brand new promotion, as I have been shopping for these recently and saw the full price. Thanks for catching it!
Thanks for this! We will have a business class trip next year, and now I want to book ASAP to ensure we get the discount.
FWIW, we did long haul Iberia LAX – MAD this year and it was quite fine. Plus the food was actually enjoyable. Better than a recent domestic first class AA dinner, sadly.
