Guest of the Day at Fairfield Inn

Not a lot of Marriott elites passing through the Fairfield Inn Chicago Gurnee on this Six Flags Great America offseason winter day. My lowly credit card-granted Silver Elite status earned me pride of place as the Guest of the Day.

I do not like pretentious hotels where staff glide around in clouds of aloofness. When I am in chain hotels I much prefer the less polished, more folksy staff found at more functional brands. In Gurnee I had a friendly late night check-in from a baby-faced young man, and a hearty send-off the next day from the manager offering 1,000 points to fill out the hotel survey “good or bad.”

Rather than show-off, I find this Guest of the Day tradition fun and a bit quaint, harkening back to the days of book-form guest registers. I have seen the same at Country Inn. My travels in the US are rather limited so perhaps others do it as well.

Today I am happily stuck overnight in hometown Minneapolis due to NYC weather. The greeting at check-in at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Minneapolis Bloomington was so ‘Minnesota Nice’ that I didn’t begrudge the newly crowned guest of the day.

Readers, Guest of the Day, fun or silly?

Went for my college reunion in Charlottesville, VA and while staying at a Courtyard Marriott there was “guest of the day”. Still have the water bottle I got:)

Fun. I’ve been guest of the day at Marriott ad Sheraton. I remember each property and the reason I was in town. How crazy is that.
