Hawaii is not my regular beat. I know Waikiki is not my scene and I have not been to the other islands. Pearl Harbor and Punchbowl are my spots.
The ‘Big Island’ is Hawaii lures me with its rugged nature. The few points hotels are on the west side.
Today the Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo reopens as a Hilton Doubletree.

Excellent news, plan to stay at this hotel in January of 2019, yup! Hilo is lovely, lush, friendly, off the beaten track spot on the Big Island. Close to Vocano National Park, Alakaka Falls, great peace cycle, camp and hike! Big Island Candy is my favorite confection shop in Hawai’i.
Looking forward to burning some HH points here.

We love the Big Island. There are something like 11 distinct microclimates which translates into a wide variety of scenery. You can literally go from a sunny beach on the west coast to snowy conditions on the top of Mauna Kea. Hilo is basically a working class town and the weather is not as nice as the western side of the island. That’s why you don’t find many resorts there. Besides Volcanoes National Park (which is approximately a 45-60 minute drive west of Hilo), there are some nice waterfalls to see. I also recommend snorkeling at the Kapoho Tide Pools… Read more »
@James – thanks for the report, not an area I know.
Good to know, but Hilo is usually rainy and/or windy, and the town is fairly run down. Would make a good over night on the way to Volcanos Nat. Park, or other east-side attractions.
