Newfoundland is off the New York map. United is terminating Newark – St. John’s (YYT) service on February 2. That leaves Orlando as the only US city with nonstop service, from WestJet and small National Airlines. Newfoundland is heavily dependent on the oil industry and the reduction in that traffic is one theory of the cut.

I am planning a summer trip that and disappointed to see it go. Last year we lost Delta’s seasonal JFK-Prince Edward Island flight, which now, too, has a seasonal Orlando flight as its only US nonstop destination.
Maybe I shouldn’t be if the comments to the CBC report are any indication, some highlights:
Not really surprised, this was the most unreliable flight at YYT. Since the flight was only once a day, any delay the previous evening and the flight was delayed or cancelled. (from Mike from StJohns)

They couldn’t have been successful anyway, I flew that route 3 times and never got in the St. John’s as scheduled. Either ill-equipped planes or inexperienced pilots????? (from Eieio)
There were a few defenders of United and a lot of criticism of Air Canada and calls for an open skies policy to let foreign carriers fly Canadian domestic routes.

Oh no! We had an opportunity to fly this route summer of 2014. It was s wonderful way to redeem 25k miles to visit this gorgeous location. The plane was on time in both directions, and mostly full. Maybe they will decide to make it seasonal?

@PedroNY – I had contacted the airport when I was researching this and it is fully cancelled, not seasonal, which had been my first guess. Although with connection, I think it will fall within AC’s great shorthaul awards.
