“Portland is a very vibrant city! For your convenience we have provided earplugs.”

I should have read beyond “The Quintessential Experience of New England” on the Hyatt Place Portland Old Port’s website to (emphasis added) “Guests would head our way even if we weren’t in the epicenter of Maine’s prestigious Downtown District.” On a summer Saturday  the night clubs across the street thumped until the wee hours and there was not a spare room in the house due to weddings, if there even are quiet rooms. Maybe get better windows rather that just offer earplugs? Serves me right for trying to use expiring certificates rather than properly researching a hotel.

Sleepless night aside, this was my first stay at a Hyatt Place and it had a mix of features that I most like and don’t like from hotels.

Don’t Like:

The complementary breakfast is nice, skews healthy and has Tazo teas, one of the few drinkable mass market tea bags on the market, though no China Green Tips.

[…] Upon return to my room at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai, the nearest to the domestic terminal of major international hotels, I found a sinful birthday cake to greet me. I am no hotshot Hyatt Diamond. I have Platinum status by virtue of their credit card and my only other stays this year were a night on business in Louisville and a sleepless credit card cert night in Portland, Maine. […]

Our return trip , only mid-weeknights, we were on a high corner room with extended floor to ceiling glass extension with wonderful view of the harbor. At $300 plus rates for our dates for 8,000 points, we loved the hotel and really Iked… Read more »

I was there over the weekend and the FD manager warned us at check-in about the loud noise at night and gave us a room at the back of the building. No views…but I rather sleep:). Traveling with kids can have its own advantages I guess!!

“Wee hours” means 1:00 AM I guess. That’s closing time for bars in Maine.
