So many travel tech articles breathlessly hype apps that are utterly useless without live connections.

The death of Google Gears was a big loss for travelers that roam the large tracts of the world where connections are rare and often expensive. The original Offline Gmail was buggy and slow but a great tool nonetheless. Find a good connection, download everything, then work offline and synch when re-connected. A great bridge between the convenience of Gmail’s web interface and offline functionality.

Google now finally released a replacement, the new Offline Google Mail, available only as a Chrome extension. Guiding Tech has helpful instructions. Just in time for The Rapid Traveler to test on his upcoming trip to South America.
