Rental car tolls in the Northeast

The muddle of rental car toll options in Florida, covered last week, is more straightforward in the Northeast since there are no all-electronic/toll-by-plate pitfalls.

The Rapid Traveler needed a rental from Newark (EWR) this past weekend and used three Hertz $50 certificates obtained with Marriott Gift cards (see the deal here). Nationwide Hertz uses PlatePass, which covers all the E-Z Pass locations in addition to other toll roads throughout the country, with the same pricing structure of $2.95/day up to $14.75/month, charged every day of the rental once used, plus toll charges. The mechanism is simple: slide open the box to use and close to not.

PlatePass 001Avis and Budget use e-Toll which is $2.50/day up to $10/week, while Alamo, Enterprise and National charge the same with TollPass but have an overall cap of $10/rental.

Dollar and Thrifty return with their Pass24 for a whopping $13.99/day so prepare to drive a ton to get value out of it. New York City, with its exorbitant bridge and tunnel tolls, can be a good deal if continuously entering and exiting the city.
